What is a smart meter?

A smart meter is a digital gas or electricity meter that sends meter readings automatically. It also lets you see your energy use in real time. Smart, eh?

How a smart meter works

A smart meter sends readings using its own secure wireless network, no wifi needed. You can even decide how often readings are sent – we recommend every half hour, to get the best out of your smart meter. Keeping an eye on your energy is easier with:

  1. Your In-Home Display – a handy digital device we’ll give you at no extra cost so you can see this energy use in real time, in £ and p
  2. Our app – personalised information about how your household uses energy at your fingertips, so you can stay on top of it wherever you are

Renting and ready to go smart?

If your name’s on the energy bills, you don’t need your landlord’s permission to get a smart meter. But it's worth letting them know and checking your tenancy agreement for any rules around changing the meter. Take a look at our guide to smart meters if you're renting.

It’s a safe, hassle-free installation that takes about an hour to replace a single meter, and 90 minutes for both gas and electricity meters (and your electricity will be off for around 30 minutes).
